
- In 1947 an art festival was held in Edinburgh but local poorer people were not allowed to participate so they made their own festival known as the fringe. With all people allowed in with only a few rules to protect the artist. (Duncan, 2021)

- In 1990 Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF) was formed (Duncan, 2021)
- In 1998 The CAFF traded mark the word “Fringe” and added strict laws (Duncan, 2021)
- In 2001 Donovan King did a car sketch Car Stories in Montreal Canada in 1991 know now as the St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival after a beer that he helped start got him kicked out of the Fringe after a reviewer who worked for a sponsor wanted a free ticket but was denied so she got paper to stop reviews and pull sponsorship unless they were kicked out of the festival. - Donovan King hated the corporate influence especially problematic ones, so he wanted to make sure it was free to enter shows for artists instead of having to pay a fee of hundreds if not thousands of dollars just to be in a show, that all proceeds go to the artists, bring community together and have a free voice to express opinions. - decided to make the first “Infringement” Festival in Montreal in 2004 (History, n.a)
- Kurt Schneiderman saw the festival in 2004 and he told people about it to make The “Infringement” Festival in Buffalo in 2005 (Willoughby-Lohr, 2021).
